AS9100 Quality Management Systems
AS9100, also known as the Aerospace Basic Quality System Standard, is a set of quality management standards devised by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) to provide supplementary requirements to ISO 9001 certification. Endorsed by the FAA, Department of Defense, and NASA, the AS9100 quality management system details the specific documentation practices required by any machine shop that designs, develops, and manufactures components for use in the aerospace industry.
Although all guiding principles of ISO 9001 are found in AS9100 certification, there are some slight differences between the two. The additional aerospace requirements detailed by AS9100 that surpass ISO 9001 are primarily located in the "Product Realization" and "Measurement, Analysis, and Improvement" sections — with increased requirements for proper documentation and record-keeping throughout the manufacturing process.
